Eliteserien is at the top of the Norwegian football league system. Seasons run from March to November with the 16 teams playing each other home and away for a total of 240 fixtures. When all these are played, the top team in the league table is the the “League Winner” while the winner of the cup in Norway is the “Norwegian Champion”.
The Norwegian 1. divisjon (usually referred to as OBOS-ligaen) is the second highest level of football in Norway. 16 teams play each other home and away. After these 240 fixtures the top two teams in the league table are promoted, while another can promote through playoff. Relegation follows a similar system.
The Norwegian 2. Division (often referred to as PostNord-ligaen for sponsorship reasons) is the third highest level of football in Norway. It has 28 teams divided into two divisions each with 14 sides. At the end of the season the team topping the league table, after 26 fixtures, is promoted while the bottom three are relegated.
The 3. Division is the fourth highest level in Norwegian football. It has six divisions, each having 14 teams who play each other home and away for a total of 26 fixtures. The team topping the table in each division at the end of the season is promoted, while the bottom four are all relegated.
